How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Do I Need?

A simple guide to choosing the right wedding photography coverage, from short ceremonies to full-day celebrations.

Short answer: most couples need around 8 hours of wedding photography to cover getting ready, the ceremony, family photos, couple portraits and the main reception moments. Smaller weddings may only need 4–6 hours; weddings with long traditional ceremonies may need 10 or more.

A typical wedding-day coverage breakdown

  • Getting ready: 1–1.5 hours
  • Ceremony: 30 minutes to 2+ hours, depending on traditions
  • Family and group photos: 30–45 minutes
  • Couple portraits: 45–60 minutes, ideally near golden hour
  • Reception entrance, speeches, first dance and cake: 2–3 hours

When do you need more than 8 hours?

Consider extra time if you have two ceremonies (for example, a traditional and a white wedding), a long distance between venues, a big bridal party or an evening send-off you want captured.

How to work out your coverage hours

Write down the start time of the first moment you want photographed and the end time of the last. Add travel time between locations. Our quote form calculates your total coverage hours automatically when you choose start and end times for each date.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the photographer at the whole reception?

Usually not. Once the first dance and main party moments are done, most couples end coverage.

Can coverage be split over two days?

Yes. Many couples book separate days for traditional ceremonies or a pre-wedding shoot.

What if the day runs late?

Agree on an hourly overtime arrangement with your photographer before the wedding.
