How Many Wedding Photos Should You Expect?
Wondering how many wedding photos to expect? We explain package counts, coverage hours and how to plan a gallery that feels like your whole day.
How many wedding photos to expect depends on your hours, team and what happens during your day. Our Essence and Story packages list 800+ edited photos, while Relive lists 1,000+. Check those details with us when you book; we would not work out your gallery size by multiplying the hours.
How many wedding photos to expect from different coverage lengths?
Your hours tell us what we can cover, but not exactly how many photographs you will receive. A busy six-hour celebration may have more different moments than a quiet eight-hour day. Driving between venues also takes time, without giving you the same variety of pictures as mingling with your guests.
Use this table to talk through your priorities with us, rather than calculate a guaranteed photo count. These hourly examples are planning guidance, not extra JZ packages. Your written quote is where you confirm the actual hours and the number of edited photographs included.
| Coverage length | Typical planning focus | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| 2–4 hours | Ceremony, essential groups and a short portrait session | Whether arrivals and congratulations fit |
| 5–6 hours | Selected preparations or reception moments around the ceremony | Which end of the day takes priority |
| 8 hours | A broader story with some preparations and reception coverage | Travel time and the timing of key formalities |
| 10 hours | More complete preparations-to-reception coverage | Exact start, finish and scheduled events |
| 12 hours | A longer celebration or more complex sequence | Whether the full event fits without gaps |
If you are getting ready at separate Durban addresses, then travelling to a ceremony and another reception venue, we need to allow for those journeys. The same hours at one venue may leave more room for relaxed portraits. Neither plan is wrong — we just need to build yours around the places you have chosen.
What photo counts do JZ's actual packages include?
| Package | Coverage and team | Edited photographs |
|---|---|---|
| Essence | Photography only; up to 10 hours; 2 photographers | 800+ |
| Story | Photo and film; up to 10 hours; 1 photographer and 1 videographer | 800+ |
| Relive | Photo and film; up to 12 hours; team of 4 | 1,000+ |
Our photography-only Essence package starts from R18 500. All our JZ wedding packages sit within R18 500 to R38 000, with Story and Relive higher in the range. Tell us what your day looks like, rather than assuming you need the biggest option. You can ask us about a custom package too.
Compare JZ's full wedding package inclusions and request a quote for your date and timeline. Compare the complete offer, including film where relevant, rather than dividing a package price by the number of photographs.
When comparing Essence and Story, check the listed engagement shoot, A4 leather album, USB and online gallery with us. Your gallery and your album serve different purposes: you will not necessarily print every photograph. Ask how you choose your album pictures and approve the design so you know what to expect.
Why do two weddings with the same hours produce different galleries?
Tell us about entrances, ceremonies, outfit changes and performances you have planned. They all affect where we need to be. A larger guest list can bring more lovely interactions, but it does not mean we can promise a separate photograph of every guest. Flag the people who matter most to you.
A long family-photo list needs time to organise, while a busy drinks reception gives us lots of different moments as they happen. A second photographer can be in another place or capture another view. That is useful for your story, but it does not automatically double the number of different finished photographs.
- Travel, waiting and access delays reduce active coverage opportunities.
- Restrictions may limit movement during a ceremony.
- Weather may concentrate portraits into a sheltered area.
- Long speeches create a different visual rhythm from dancing.
- A carefully edited gallery may omit almost identical pictures.
The guide to photography hours helps you work backwards from the events you want included. Start with that story before focusing on a number.
What does an edited photograph mean?
Ask any photographer you are considering what editing includes. In plain terms, it means choosing the photographs and making sure the finished pictures look balanced, natural and consistent. Removing objects or making major changes is a different request. Ask about anything important to you before assuming it is included.
It is also worth asking whether a colour picture and its black-and-white version count as two photographs. Does the quoted number cover your wedding only, or another session too? We welcome clear questions like these; they make it easier for you to compare what each package actually offers.
The pictures taken during the day are not the same as your finished gallery. You should not assume every picture taken will be included. Ask how you will download your final photos, whether they are suitable for printing and what personal sharing is allowed. Get those details in writing before booking.
Should you choose the photographer promising the most images?
We would not choose on numbers alone. A lovely gallery lets you relive the day without sorting through hundreds of almost identical pictures. Look for meaningful variety: your people, the ceremony, the room and the fun of the reception. The headline count is only one part of what you are choosing.
Ask to see complete wedding galleries shared with permission, especially from places similar to yours. If your reception is indoors and quite dark, you want to feel comfortable with those photographs too. A collection of beautiful sunset portraits alone will not tell you how the rest of your day might look.
Read the hiring guide for KZN couples for the wider comparison. Style, reliability, communication and scope all belong alongside quantity.
How can you help your gallery feel complete?
Give us a short list of your priorities rather than worrying about directing every photograph. Tell us about important people, surprises and anything with special meaning. Share your final timetable too, so we can plan to be where the moments that matter to you are happening.
Use our full wedding shot list — a checklist of the photos you would love — to flag essentials. Then leave room for the unexpected moments. A manageable family list and someone who can gather people will help us more than a request for extra pictures.
Frequently asked questions
Does a second photographer double the photo count?
No. We can cover things happening at the same time and give you different views, but we do not need to include every repeated picture to tell your story well.
Are teaser photos the whole gallery?
No — teasers are a small early selection to enjoy while you wait. Ask us how they fit into your final gallery and check the timetable agreed for your package.
When does JZ deliver the final photographs?
Check the listed timings with us: Essence’s final gallery within 4 weeks; Story’s final delivery within 6 weeks; Relive’s gallery and film within 4 weeks. Your booking documents should make your timetable clear.
