How Much Should You Spend on Wedding Photography?

We help you work out a comfortable photography budget, look beyond the headline price and choose coverage that suits your day.

When you ask us how much to spend on wedding photography, we start with what you can comfortably afford and the memories you most want to keep. Test roughly 10–15% as a planning starting point, not a rule: photography alone and photography plus film are different purchases, and smaller weddings may need a larger percentage.

How much to spend on wedding photography as a percentage?

We find a percentage useful for comparing choices before you sign anything. It does not establish what a photographer should charge or what you must spend. A small wedding still needs editing, preparation and professional coverage, even when fewer guests attend. Conversely, a large catering bill does not automatically mean you need more expensive photographs.

South African budget guides sometimes allocate 10–15% to photography and videography together. Treat that as an indicative editorial benchmark rather than a national survey or a photography-only requirement. The South African wedding budget guide uses that combined category; actual Durban quotes and your priorities matter more than an average.

Start with the amount you can pay without compromising essential living expenses. Then decide whether your record of your day means still photographs, moving images with voices, or both. Comparing those choices inside one percentage without explaining the scope is misleading.

What do different total wedding budgets mean in practice?

These are illustrative allocation calculations, not supplier quotes or promises that a whole wedding can be delivered at each total. The 10% and 15% columns simply show the arithmetic. Overall wedding affordability varies by venue, season and guest count.

Total wedding budget10% allocation15% allocationEssence at R18 500 as a share
R100 000R10 000R15 00018.5%
R200 000R20 000R30 0009.25%
R300 000R30 000R45 0006.17%
R500 000R50 000R75 0003.7%

At the smaller total, choosing Essence requires a deliberate above-benchmark allocation. At the larger total, the same starting package occupies a much smaller share. You’re not getting it wrong just because your percentage looks different from someone else’s. Values above the JZ range in this table are mathematical allowances, not JZ package prices.

Our packages at R18 500–R38 000 fit many KZN budgets, though not every budget or coverage requirement. Essence starts at R18 500 for photography only; Story and Relive combine photo and film higher in the range. Compare wedding packages within R18 500–R38 000, then request a quote for your date and plans before allocating the balance.

How do you judge value beyond the headline price?

For us, value means photographs you love and a plan that lets you enjoy your wedding. Review complete galleries, not only sunset portraits. Look at indoor ceremonies, family groups, lively receptions and the quieter moments between them. Ask whether you would enjoy looking at that approach for years, rather than choosing whichever editing trend is currently popular.

  • Coverage: will the included hours reach your important events?
  • Team: can the proposed staffing cover overlapping preparations or locations?
  • What you receive: are the gallery, album, film and audio you actually want included?
  • Consistency: do full weddings show dependable work in different light?
  • Clarity: are timing, delivery and any additional charges explained in writing?

If you’re comparing an Essence description listing up to 10 hours, two photographers, drone photos, 800+ finished photos, an engagement session, an A4 leather album, USB and an online gallery, ask us to confirm those details in your quote. Do the same for preview photos within 48 hours and a final gallery within four weeks. Your agreement is the place to check exactly what you’ll receive and when. Most importantly, let’s make sure the hours suit your actual day.

When is spending a higher share reasonable?

A higher share can make sense when photographs are one of your top priorities and you consciously reduce something else. You might choose a smaller guest list or fewer decorative installations rather than borrowing to maintain every original idea. A longer celebration or separate locations may also change the coverage required.

You shouldn’t feel frightened into spending more. Spending more does not guarantee that you will love a style, and finding someone under “luxury wedding photographer Durban” doesn’t tell you whether their work feels right for you. A calm consultation and representative work are more useful than labels. Read what to look for when hiring a KZN photographer before deciding.

What should you reduce before cutting essential coverage?

Separate your non-negotiables from nice-to-haves. Protect the ceremony, meaningful family combinations and enough portrait time first. Then evaluate optional reception hours, extra products or elaborate styling according to what you will use. Ask about a custom package rather than assuming every inclusion can be removed for a proportional discount.

For a practical worksheet, use the line-by-line photography budget guide. If your main dilemma is décor versus recording your day, read photography versus décor spending. These are different decisions from selecting an arbitrary percentage.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10% enough for wedding photography?

Sometimes. On a smaller overall budget it may not cover your preferred professional package. Compare actual scope and quotes rather than treating 10% as a ceiling.

Should film come from the same percentage?

Only if you defined the allocation as photo plus film. Otherwise create a separate film allowance so you do not accidentally underfund photography.

Are more photos always better value?

No. Consistency, meaningful coverage and usable delivery matter more than the largest count. Review full galleries and ask how the images are selected.

Does a bigger wedding require a bigger photo budget?

Not automatically. Guest count can affect group logistics, but hours, simultaneous events and photos, films and albums are more direct questions for us.
