How Much Should You Budget for Wedding Photography?

We help you work out a wedding photography budget from your actual plans, with a simple worksheet for included items, optional extras and money kept aside.

To work out how much to budget for wedding photography, start with the parts of your day you want us there for. Then check your hours, team, finished photographs, album, travel and optional film. We find that a clear worksheet is far more useful than comparing starting prices alone.

How much to budget for wedding photography: where do you start?

Start with a rough timetable and your locations. When would you like getting-ready photos? When is the ceremony, where can family pictures fit, and what is your last must-have reception moment? Count the whole stretch, including travel. You do not need to make it perfect before speaking to us — a rough plan is enough to begin.

Give any photographer you are considering the same information: your date, venues, approximate guest count, start and finish times, and whether you want film. Mark anything still undecided. That makes your Durban wedding photography quotes easier to compare, and helps us avoid building a recommendation around the wrong assumption.

Step 1: How many coverage hours do you actually need?

Think about the moments you cannot repeat, then work backwards. If hearing the speeches again matters more than late dancing, let that guide your plan. We would rather discuss the right hours with you than squeeze everything into an awkward window. Ask how a change to the running order or extra time would be handled and quoted.

Our photography-only Essence package starts from R18 500, with up to 10 hours listed. That is the limit to check against your day, not a promise that every possible timetable will fit. Our coverage-hours guide can help you work out what to ask us for.

Step 2: What team and finished photographs belong in the base quote?

Check the team as well as the hours. Two photographers can cover different places or moments, depending on your timing and distances. When comparing Essence, confirm the listed two photographers, drone photos, 800+ edited photos, engagement shoot, A4 leather album, USB and online gallery. Ask us to confirm the stated 48 hours for teasers and four weeks for the final gallery in your booking details.

Mark included items as included on your worksheet, so you do not budget for them twice. Ask about album choices, design approval and optional upgrades rather than assuming every print product is covered. For drone photographs, we also need suitable conditions and permission. We would always plan lovely photographs on the ground too.

Compare our JZ wedding packages within R18 500–R38 000 and request an itemised quote for the coverage you need. Ask us about anything unclear now, so you know what you are choosing before your wedding.

Step 3: How do you account for travel, albums and extras?

Give anything uncertain its own line on your worksheet. Ask about travel to your Midlands venue, a late finish, accommodation, parking, access or extra photography time. These are questions, not fees we are saying apply to you. We will confirm your arrangements in your quote. Check taxes and any venue access costs too.

  • Mark the included album as included; list optional extra copies separately.
  • Ask whether a requested location changes travel arrangements.
  • Record overtime as a quoted rate and authorisation process, if applicable.
  • Keep film and the booth as separate decisions rather than hidden extras.
  • Reserve uncommitted money until all uncertain lines have been answered.

What does a worked photography budget look like?

Here is an example using a R25 000 budget: Essence’s published starting price, plus money you keep aside while you ask questions. Those reserves are not JZ charges or supplier estimates. Replace them with written quotes for your own plans. Your venue, season, guest count and optional purchases may change what you need.

Worksheet lineAllocationShare of envelopeStatus
Essence base packageR18 50074%Published starting price; confirm suitability
Included hours, team, album and galleryR0 additional0%Already in base; do not count twice
Travel or access reserveR2 50010%Couple's holding allowance, not a fee
Optional print or album upgrade reserveR1 5006%Spend only against a quote
Uncommitted contingencyR2 50010%Keep available
Total envelopeR25 000100%Film and booth not included

If your travel arrangements are confirmed as included, you can release that reserve or keep it available for something unexpected. You do not have to spend the whole budget. If an optional extra costs more than you have allowed, decide together whether to leave it out, reduce another optional item or increase your budget before booking.

Step 4: Where do film and the 360 Spin Booth fit?

If you want to hear your vows and enjoy the movement of the day again, compare a combined package rather than guessing a film price to add to Essence. Our Story and Relive options sit higher within the R18 500–R38 000 range. Check the team, film and delivery details together, not just the difference in price.

The optional 68cm 360 Spin Booth gives your reception guests a fun video experience. It does not replace your ceremony photographs or wedding film. Ask for a separate quote and what space it needs, then decide whether it fits after your essential coverage. Our booth expectations guide helps you picture it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I budget by the hour alone?

No. Your team, finished photographs, products and delivery matter too. Two packages with equal hours can give you quite different things, so we would compare the complete offer.

Do I need another album allowance?

Not for the A4 leather album listed with Essence. Ask us to confirm that inclusion, then budget separately only if you want an upgrade or extra copies.

Is a reserve a confirmed extra charge?

No — it is simply money you keep available until you have an answer. A written quote tells you what a charge actually is; a reserve does not.

Where can I compare budget percentages?

Our guide to photography’s share of your total budget can help with that. Here, we are working from the coverage you need upwards, so you can build a practical amount.

Ready to plan?
