Matric Dance Photography: How to Look and Feel Your Best

Practical advice for matric dance photographs — from timing your getting-ready shots to posing that actually looks like you.

Your matric dance is one of the few nights where everyone you have grown up with is dressed up in the same room. The photographs last a lot longer than the night does, so it is worth thinking about them beforehand.

Do a pre-dance shoot at home

The best matric dance images are almost never taken at the venue. They are taken an hour earlier, at home or in a garden, while the light is soft and nobody is rushing. Thirty to forty minutes is enough for solo portraits, family photographs and a set with your date or friend group.

Timing and light

Aim to start photographs 90 minutes before the doors open, which usually lands in the late afternoon. Open shade — under a tree, on a covered patio, against a plain wall out of direct sun — is far kinder than harsh midday light or a dark lounge.

Dress and detail

  • Steam the outfit the day before. Creases show in every frame.
  • Keep the background simple — cars, bins and washing lines pull attention away.
  • Bring the shoes, the flowers and the accessories to the shoot, not to the venue.
  • If the fabric is very shiny, avoid direct sun; it blows out easily.

Posing that does not feel awkward

You do not need to know how to pose. A few small things carry most of the work: weight on your back foot, shoulders angled slightly away from the camera, chin forward and slightly down, hands doing something rather than hanging. Beyond that, we direct — and the frames that people keep are usually the ones taken between the posed shots, when everyone is laughing.

Group photographs

Decide who is in the group shots before the night. Ten friends arranged deliberately photographs far better than twenty-five people crowding in. Shoot the group first while everyone still looks fresh.

On the night

Arrival shots, the red carpet, the table, the dance floor — venue coverage is fast-moving and candid. If your school allows it, a 360° photo booth on the night is where the whole grade ends up at some point.

What to ask your photographer

  1. How long is the pre-dance session?
  2. How many edited images do you receive, and how soon?
  3. Do they cover the arrival and the venue too, or only the pre-shoot?
  4. Can family and friends be included at no extra cost?
